Overview

Drums

The more than 13,000 "sound snippets", from which the virtual drum set was recreated, were played by a professional drummer on a carefully selected drum kit and recorded with high-end microphones in a recording studio with excellent acoustics. The mouseover function in this window lets you see the possible microphone positions; click on them to see the mic selection window where you can select the individual microphones – all "Made in Germany", by the way.

Mic Selection

For every possible microphone position on the individual instruments in the drum set, DrumMic’a! suggests the most suited microphone and shows a typically ideal position in the preview window (namely those with which the instrument was recorded) and provides you with the most important product info.

Mixer

The channel strips on the specialist digital mixer correspond from left to right with the order of the microphones placed at the drum. You can use the faders, panorama faders and integrated studio effects (equalizer, transient designer, compressor) of the virtual studio mixer to edit all the individual sounds and the overall result professionally and mix it to a homogenous sound.

Options

The options view lets you change other settings such as the velocity performance (response behaviour of the key stroke or drum trigger) and the MIDI mapping (the distribution of individual drum instruments to individual keyboard keys).

Beats

In the Beats browser, you can see a folder structure displaying the MIDI grooves. Double click to load a particular file to the internal MIDI player in the navigation bar (top), where you can hear it. If you like the MIDI groove you selected, you can simply drag-and-drop it to the timeline of your sequencer application (Logic, Cubase etc.) By stringing together the right MIDI grooves you can arrange an entire song with drums. 1,370 authentic drum grooves, fills and intros – filed by genre – give you plenty freedom to find your favourite style and create your own sound.

  • Is it essential to have the KONTAKT Player on my computer?

    • The KONTAKT Player is freeware supplied by Native Instruments. It is the platform for the virtual instrument DrumMic’a! and is installed along with it as standard unless it or a KOMPLETE version from Native Instruments is already available on your computer. Operation without the KONTAKT or KOMPLETE software from Native Instruments is not possible – it would be like a sports car without gears and tyres.

  • How do I install the software?

    • It’s quite simple: either you have a DrumMic’a! installation DVD in your hands or you can download the installer from the www.DrumMica.de site. With the DVD, you install the software package simply by placing it in your DVD drive and looking for either DrumMicA Installer Mac.mpkg (Apple Mac OSX) or DrumMicA Setup PC.exe (Windows PC systems), depending on your operating system. Double-clicking on the file name calls up the installation program; installing the software package requires minimal input from you. Simply follow the instructions on the screen.

  • I have installed the software but can't find any software called DrumMic’a! on my hard drive. How can I start DrumMic’a!?

    • Like many software instruments from different manufacturers, DrumMic’a! is based on the KONTAKT or KOMPLETE sampler platform (if you already have licensed use of KOMPLETE from Native Instruments on your computer). To organise this wide range of instruments centrally in one place, this Native Instruments software offers a standardised view: all the modules are contained in a virtual studio rack.

As a stand-alone program: to start DrumMic’a!, just search for the "Native Instruments" folder in your programs folder. You will find a KONTAKT (or KOMPLETE) folder there which contains the KONTAKT program. Double click on the icon to load KONTAKT.

As a plugin in a DAW (such as Logic): download the virtual instrument KONTAKT (stereo) in an instrument channel strip. It is located in the folder AU Instruments > Native Instruments > KONTAKT 5 > stereo, for example.

The KONTAKT player will have a library tab (a preview image of the software link in the Libraries tab) displaying the DrumMic’a! logo. Click on this image to see the language versions of DrumMic’a! currently available. You can select one and then load it by using the drag-and-drop function to the black field on the right or by double clicking.

SENNHEISER ACCOUNT AND SUPPORT

  • I want to use the DrumMic’a! software but I don't want to open an account with Sennheiser. Is that possible?

    • DrumMic’a! was designed from the outset to allow fully functional use of the software for a 15-minute demo period without activation. If there is no online connection or if you want to try out the software first, it is possible to use all the features of DrumMic’a! for this period. When the demo time expires you need to an activation code to continue to use DrumMic’a!. The activation code is personal to you and requires a Sennheiser account.

  • I already have an account with Native Instruments. Why do I need to register again on the DrumMic’a! page?

    • Native Instruments offers its own KONTAKT platform to other software manufacturers as the basis for their instruments too. DrumMic’a! is provided with the free KONTAKT freeware player which does not require any registration with Native Instruments. The additional DrumMic’a! module, developed by Sennheiser and Neumann, is also made available under a freeware licence. The licensing process in this model is such that an individual obtains an activation code through their Sennheiser account and then enters this in the Service Center (the registration tool for Native Instruments).

  • I already have the full version of KONTAKT or KOMPLETE from Native Instruments. Do I still need to install the KONTAKT freeware player anyway?

    • No. The KONTAKT freeware player and the full versions of KONTAKT or KOMPLETE are all perfect for DrumMic’a!. As long as you are authorised to use one of these programs on your computer, the freeware player option is automatically suppressed during installation. You can open DrumMic’a! in any of the three programs.

  • What are the data protection guidelines for registering with Sennheiser?

    • In general terms, Sennheiser always adheres to and exceeds the strict privacy directives that are currently in force. For information about the use of your personal data, please go to www.sennheiser.com/privacy. You can find all the relevant information on this subject there.

  • I have forgotten the password for my Sennheiser account. What should I do?

    • Just click here, enter the e-mail address stored in your personal Sennheiser account, and we will send your password again.

  • What technical support does Sennheiser provide for DrumMic’a! in Germany?

    • The DrumMic’a! software is made available using a freeware licence for free. During its development, tests were carried out on many different computer configurations and the software was optimised; installation with the installation program is also very easy. Any questions you are likely to have regarding the software have been answered in detail in the FAQs or in our manual.

On this basis, we are confident that we have avoided most problems and provided comprehensive answers to likely questions; we appreciate your understanding that we cannot offer direct support (such as via hotline/e-mail form) for the freeware DrumMic`a! or Native Instruments KONTAKT.

  • Where can I get a copy of the manual for DrumMic’a!?

    • The manual for the DrumMic’a! software, available in English and German at the time of delivery, is integrated on your computer with the software. You can call it up easily in KONTAKT through the help menu in the task bar. You can also find it the "Documentation" folder under Programs > Native Instruments > KONTAKT 5. Or you can download the manual again here.

  • I have moved. How can I change my personal details?

    • It’s quite simple: you can overwrite the entry fields with your personal details. Just remember to click on the "Accept changes" button before you leave the page.

KONTAKT FROM NATIVE INSTRUMENTS

  • I would like to install the virtual DrumMic’a! drum set. What is the KONTAKT 5 Player that the installation program wants to install too?

    • KONTAKT 5 Player is a free sample player from Native Instruments, a successful manufacturer of hardware and software for music productions. It is based on the widely used sample flagship KONTAKT 5. The player is compatible with all professional "Powered by KONTAKT" instruments, such as DrumMic’a! and other sample-based instruments from third parties.

To keep software like DrumMic’a! permanently compatible with every operating system and versions of recording programs involves a tremendous amount of work. Sennheiser used the KONTAKT platform for developing the DrumMic’a! software in the knowledge that a large team of developers are constantly checking that the interfaces are still up to date with other programs. This would not be possible in-house at Sennheiser or Neumann.

  • I am having problems with the KONTAKT freeware player. Where can I get help?

LICENSING I ACTIVATION CODE

  • My demo mode has run out and I've received a messaged that I need to "activate" DrumMic’a! . What do I need to do?

    • To have unrestricted use of DrumMic’a!, you need to enter an activation code. You can view this 25-character code in your personal Sennheiser account under "Licence and service" as soon as you click the "Activation Code" button. You can then simply copy it into the input field in the Native Instruments Service Center.

The Service Center is the administration software for licences at Native Instruments. You can access it three different ways:

      • The KONTAKT library tab for DrumMic’a! contains an "Activate" button. Clicking on the button starts the Service Center.

      • When the 15-minute demo period is finished and DrumMic’a! closes, you will see a reminder to activate the software. Simply click on "Activate" here to call up the Native Instruments Service Center.

      • Look in Program folder > Native Instruments > Service Center for the "Service Center" software program. You can double click on here at any time to start it.

  • I have been given the DrumMic’a! software by a friend who already has an account with Sennheiser. Can I use their activation code?

    • Unfortunately, each activation code can only be used once. If you try to use an activation code again it can block the software on the authorised computer. But the process of registering with Sennheiser and calling up your activation code is quick.

  • What can I do if my activation code does not work?

    • Check first that you have entered the correct activation code. This 25-digit code is always displayed in your Sennheiser account under "Licence and Service".

Tips for entering the activation code correctly:

      • Make sure there are no spaces at the start or end of the code.

      • Use the copy and paste function instead of manually entering the code.

      • Please check that you have copied and entered the full code. Otherwise it won't work.

      • When entering the code manually, make sure that you enter all zeros using the numeric key 0 and not the letter O.

IN GENERAL

  • What's all this about software? Have Sennheiser and Neumann stopped selling microphones?

    • The DrumMic’a! represents a special drum kit that is captured in terms of its basic sound. This enables you to discover, in the simplest way possible, the acoustic impact of different types and positions of microphones on the individual instruments. However, it’s not just a case of one drum set fits all when it comes to the recording world...... depending on the band, song etc. drummers mostly prefer their own set and recording room, sometimes the drum set is tuned to the key of the song, or special cymbals, snares or skins are used to create a desired sound. Looked at this way, software products like DrumMic’a! and electronic synthesizers only produce a limited selection of the drum sound possible in a music production. THE universal drum tool that can reproduce every sound concept accurately will probably never exist.

DRUMMIC’A! SOFTWARE USE

  • I have downloaded DrumMic’a! onto my computer but I can't see any folder structure in the BEATS menu. How can I solve this problem?

    • This phenomenon can occur on a small number of computers but it can be easily fixed. This is due to special formatting settings on the system hard drive.

The solution: look for the folder "Midi Files" in the program folder and rename this "MIDI Files" with MIDI written in capital letters. When you then reload DrumMic’a! in KONTAKT it should be there.
